Strictly speaking, the beginnings of MALZERS date back to around 1600, when the Scherpel family was mentioned as the operator of a grain mill near Bielefeld. The first bakery was founded in Wanne-Eickel in 1901.

Hans Scherpel, the second generation, expanded the business to include a delivery business and a grocery store, which was run by Erna Scherpel, who also helped out in the bakery every day. This is how the idea of supplying other grocery stores with packaged sliced bread was born. In 1951, the 50th anniversary year, the delivery fleet already included 5 transport vehicles.

The 3rd generation with Josef Scherpel specialized in this and moved the company headquarters to Dortmund in 1970.

At the end of the 1970s, he tore down the old bakery and built a supermarket with an integrated bakery in the checkout area - the birth of our branches based on the current model. This was followed by the "Eickel" and "Rema" branches, also with Detlef Malzer as tenant.

In 1986, Hans-Joachim Scherpel took over the bakery and its three branches as the fourth generation. From then on, there was the “Scherpel Brot” bakery and the “Malzers Backstube” sales outlets, just as they are today. Due to the growing market, the company expanded, which led to the construction of a new headquarters in Gelsenkirchen.

Finally, in 2016, Christian Scherpel, the 5th generation of bakers, joined the management team.
